Holiday Stress and Autoimmune Disease Flares

Ever wonder why all the holiday hoo-rah and fa la la la la seems to ensure an autoimmune flare?

It seems that a recent study has proven the relationship between the neurological system, specifically the "flight or fight" response,  and the immune system.
"Ever since Hans Seyle's groundbreaking work on stress, scientists have been trying to understand why stressful situations often exacerbate autoimmune diseases and cause re-emergence of latent infections," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "In true fight or flight situations, stress can be a lifesaver, but understanding how the neurological response to the stress of everyday events such as seeing your family around the holidays impacts immune responses should provide opportunities for new therapies."
You can read more about this study completed by the University of Connecticut Health Center and published in the December 2009 issue of Journal of Leukocyte Biology, here.

Yep....all the good and bad stress surrounding the holidays can make us feel like crawling under a blanket and hiding out until Jan....or maybe until Spring.

Most days are difficult enough to get through, but we are able to pace ourselves a little better than the holidays.Very often we are not in our home environment, and thus feel uncomfortable lying down to rest in someone else's home. So we act like that bunny rabbit battery except we don't have excess energy...we're running on empty.
